NATIONAL
SERVICE SCHEME (N.S.S.)
|
| |
The
National Sevice Sheme was started in 1967-70 with a view to promoting
social consiousness and a sense of responsibility as well as a sense
of discipline and dignity of labour among college students. The
scheme utilizes the leisure time of students for 3 years of their
college studies in various items of social service which not only
help the community but also provides an oppurtunity to the students
to appreciate the conditions prevalent in the community. The ultimate
aim has been to develop the personality of studentes through community
service.
Objective
:
The
overall objective of the National Service Scheme is the service
to the community offered while undergoing instructions, in an educational
institution. The primary aim of the scheme is to enable the students
to upgrade their personality and experience through community service.
This objective is sought to be achieved by enabling the student
to
- Understand
the community in which they work.
- Understand
themselves in relation to their community.
- Identify
the needs and problems in the community in the solution of which
they can be involved.
- Develop
among themselves a sense of social responsibility.
- Apply
their education in finding practical solution to individual and
community problems.
- Develop
competence required for group living and sharing responsibilities.
- Gains
skills in mobilising community participation.
- Acquire
leadership qualities and democratic attitudes.
- Develop
capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
- Practise
national integration.
The
Motto :
The
motto watch word of the N.S.S. is "NOT ME BUT YOU". This
express the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for
selfless service and appreciation of the other man's point of view
and also to show considerations for fellow human beings. It underlines
that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare
of society as a whole. Therefore it should be the aim of the N.S.S.
to demonstrate this motto in its day to day programme.
The scheme has brought N.S.S. students in direct contact with community
problems and needs and development processes. Activities undertaken
under N.S.S. have included environment enrichment and conservation,
health, family welfare, nutrition programmes, programmes aimed at
creating an awareness for improvement in the status of women, working
hospitals and welfare institutions and production oriented work like
soil testing and soil health care, promotion of co-operative societies,
non formal education and assistance to local authorities in relief
and rehabilitation work during natural calamities and natural emergencies.
Other activities have also been undertaken keeping in view the local
needs and priorities. Special camping programmes organized under N.S.S.
during vacations have resulted in creation of many durable community
assets where sufficiently integrated, N.S.S. has helped to make the
academic programmes more relevant and linked with community.
The
Symbol :
The
symbol of the N.S.S. is based on the "RATH" wheel of the
Konark Sun Temple of Orissa. These giant wheels of th esun temple
portray the cycle of creation, preservation and relief, and signify
the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol,a
simplified form of the sun-chariot wheel, primarily depicts movement.
The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life .It stands for continuity
as well as change and implies on the part of the N.S.S. for the continuous
striving forward for social transformation and upliftment.
S.R.G.P.T.
has got the National Award for the Best N.S.S. unit in 1997 -1998
and Sri. Khalid got the award for the Best N.S.S. Programme Officer
who was the N.S.S. Programme Officer at that time.
The
N.S.S. unit in S.R.G.P.T. formed a Blood Donor's form in which the
N.S.S. volunteers always kept ready to donate the blood and it has
been widely appreciated among the public. The 10 day special camp
is conducted in every year and in that camp the N.S.S. volunteers
